The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses simultaneously adopts two contradictory personas—one to establish its right to demand constant obedience and trust from all Jehovah’s Witnesses and the other to defend itself against criticism when it is proven to be wrong about something.

Persona #1: The “faithful and discreet slave” of Matthew 24:45—chosen by Jehovah and Jesus to be the sole dispenser of spiritual truth in these latter days.

Persona #2: Humble Christian brothers who do not claim to be inspired, infallible, or perfect.

This 128-page paperback was written to complement Rhodes’ 1993 book, Reasoning From the Scriptures With the Jehovah’s Witnesses, which I reviewed in an earlier blog article in this series.

It is doctrinal in focus and, in length, “short on purpose.” Organized into 10 primary points the reader should make to Witnesses, each chapter contrasts Watchtower errors with the biblical position and suggests a relatively small number of questions and points which the reader can present to Witnesses to challenge Watchtower teachings.

A final “Digging Deeper” paragraph ends each chapter by citing pages in Rhodes’ 1993 book where the reader can find more information.

Stage 5 of a Witnessing Relationship: Challenging Directly

Stage 5 - Challenging directlyUnless they are harboring secret doubts, the Jehovah’s Witnesses who come to your home believe that the Watchtower Society is God’s visible organization on earth. They believe that it is God’s only channel of communication to man in these last days.

They also believe that the Governing Body of the Watchtower organization are the “faithful and discreet slave” (Matthew 24:45) and that God has put them in charge of his worldwide work.

In order for them to be saved, they must at some point come to rest their faith in Christ himself rather than in an organization that claims to represent him. In other words, their reliance on the Watchtower must be broken.
