Today we begin a new blog series on how to help Jehovah’s Witnesses who are in the process of leaving the Watchtower or who have already left.
When I first started trying to get through to Jehovah’s Witnesses, a number of high-profile Witnesses had already left. Many of them had become Christians and were vocal about their reasons for leaving. Several of them had started ministries to warn people away from the Watchtower organization and to help Witnesses see the truth of the gospel and come to saving faith in Christ.
A few years later, I found a website known as JWN, which was a support group for Witnesses who had doubts about the Watchtower.
I assumed this was one of those Christian ministries, but I quickly learned otherwise.
A high percentage of the members had become atheists or agnostics.
Several posted comments which mocked people who believed in such things as “an invisible sky daddy,” “talking snakes,” or “talking donkeys.”
They saw all religion as a crutch (at best) or a snare and a racket (at worst) and encouraged others to throw it off entirely and live their lives free from such pernicious, controlling teachings.
As I followed the comments of other people, I discovered that there is a whole spectrum of reasons why Witnesses leave the Watchtower or why they stay in even though they wish they could leave. For those who have left, there are many different places that they can end up spiritually. And there is a large variety of ways both Witnesses and former Witnesses interact with the Watchtower organization and its belief system.
In this blog series, I plan to discuss a number of these situations and give you suggestions for how to help those Jehovah’s Witnesses or ex-Witnesses to leave the Watchtower and come to Jesus.
