In the Watchtower Bible translation, Ephesians 2:8 says, “By this undeserved kindness you have been saved through faith, and this is not of your own doing; rather, it is God’s gift.” (emphasis added)

Imagine for a moment that you owe someone a staggering amount of money—let’s say a billion dollars. There is no way that you would ever be able to pay it off. In order for you to be rescued from this predicament, a very wealthy and generous person would have to pay it for you.
The Watchtower’s emphasis on proving worthy keeps Jehovah’s Witnesses on a never-ending treadmill of works, continually uncertain of where they stand with Jehovah and fearful that they will be judged to have fallen short.
