Preparatory Witnessing Principles

We can’t get through to every Jehovah’s Witness, but we can get through to some of them. There are two extremes to avoid when it comes to getting through to Jehovah’s Witnesses. One is to think that it’s a waste of time, that they can’t be saved. The other is to look for a “quick fix,” a can’t-miss Bible passage or witnessing technique. Both extremes are wrong and counterproductive. (p. 33) Continue reading

Student Role Teaching

Because Jehovah’s Witnesses consider our churches to be satanic, it is virtually impossible for Christians to teach them anything directly. They think we have been deceived by Satan. So they have to be the teachers. They come to our doors solely to bring “the truth” (which is what they call their religion) to us. If we don’t humbly accept their efforts, they will leave.

Consequently, Christians need to engage in student role teaching—getting through to Jehovah’s Witnesses by asking questions rather than by making assertions. The questions must plant seeds that challenge Watchtower teachings. As such, they will be questions that Jehovah’s Witnesses would never dare or even think to ask on their own. Summing Up the Series

Bible Teach Ch 99 summaryThis series has used the contents of the Watchtower’s study book, What Does the Bible Really Teach?, as a springboard for employing the approaches contained in my book, Getting Through to Jehovah’s Witnesses: Approaching Bible Discussions in Unexpected Ways.

I’m sure you can see the difference between the passive student role the Witnesses are expecting you to fulfill and the active approach I have set out in this series.

By knowing ahead of time what topics are likely to be covered, making your own notes, and being ready to address the topics using the various approaches I have given you, you will be able to present the gospel effectively to the Witnesses in the midst of their own Watchtower book study.

Going through “Bible Teach” step by step has made this a long series—more than 60 posts.

Because of that, this summarizing post contains two indexing outlines: Continue reading

Paragraph 1 (pp. 174-175) begins “Bible Teach” Chapter 18—“Baptism and Your Relationship with God”—by commenting about how eager the Ethiopian official in Acts 8 was to be baptized. You are supposed to feel the same way.

I recommend that you point out to the Witnesses how quickly Philip fulfilled his request. There were no lengthy educational sessions and no evaluations by elders to determine his worthiness to be baptized.

As this chapter unfolds, you’ll see all the requirements the Watchtower puts on people before they can be baptized. After you’ve covered them all in your study of the chapter, I’ll be recommending that you remind the Witnesses that none of the people in the Bible had to go through such a process in order to “qualify for baptism.” Continue reading

Get Out of “Babylon the Great”!

Bible teach Ch 15

Acting under the assumption that by this point in your study you believe only Jehovah’s Witnesses practice the true religion, paragraph 15 (p. 151) of Chapter 15 urges you to take immediate action: “To be approved by God, not only must we believe in his existence but we must also do his will. We must also break free from false religion and embrace true worship.” Continue reading
