“Neither Inspired Nor Perfect”

Broken chainThe February, 2017 Watchtower article entitled, “Who Is Leading God’s People Today?” contains the following statements regarding the Jehovah’s Witness organization: “The Governing Body is neither inspired nor perfect. Therefore, it can make mistakes when explaining the Bible or directing the organization.”

Sounds pretty humble, doesn’t it? And that’s the way the vast majority of Jehovah’s Witnesses who read those words will interpret them.

Witnessing to Jehovah’s Witnesses in Love: 3 Important DON’TS

When discussing the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses, conflict is inevitable. Key Watchtower teachings are simply not compatible with the doctrines of evangelical Christianity. But we should do what we can to avoid unnecessary conflict.

The Bible doesn’t tell us to avoid all conflict. In fact, Jude 3 instructs Christians “to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.” But this doesn’t mean that we are to be contentious in our manner. We should try to avoid issues that stir up ill will without advancing the message that we are trying to get across. 1 Peter 3:15-16 admonishes us to answer those who question us “with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.”

Love isn’t just a witnessing technique. It needs to be a way of life. Part of extending this type of love is building relational bridges.

I’m not suggesting that you pretend to agree with erroneous Watchtower teachings or water down the gospel message. I am saying that you must see and treat Jehovah’s Witnesses as people for whom Christ died, as people whom he loves and to whom he is offering salvation.
