Most of my book and blog posts have been written to talk about how to get through to Jehovah’s Witnesses who are PIMI (Physically In Mentally In).

That’s because those are the Witnesses you are most likely to encounter.

They believe most—if not all—of the current Watchtower teachings.

They are active in the religion, especially in the door to door and literature cart ministries.

This gives you several advantages:

      1. You can know ahead of time what they believe and why they believe it.

You can read Watchtower literature to check on their current teachings, and my book and blog posts cover all of this in detail and explain how to discuss a number of specific Bible topics with them.

  1. You can know hat arguments they will make and what illustrations they will use.

Because of this, you won’t be caught off guard, and you will have ample time to prepare for your meetings with them.

  1. You can know the stresses they are under as they try to prove worthy of everlasting life via the endless works treadmill their religion has created.

This can be of great benefit to you in knowing how to connect with them relationally as you try to show them from the scriptures that salvation is 100% a gift from God.

It’s not that Jesus Christ made the down payment and we have to keep up the installments.

Rather, Jesus paid it all.

Salvation involves a personal relationship with Jesus rather than a religion of organizational works.

  1. In the main, you don’t have to break the ice because they want to talk with you about God and the Bible.

I don’t know about you, but in dealing with the average person, bringing up the subjects of sin, judgment, and our need for salvation comes hard for me.

This isn’t a problem at all when you encounter PIMI Jehovah’s Witnesses.

So, we do have many advantages as we try to get through to Jehovah’s Witnesses.

However, dealing with PIMI Jehovah’s Witnesses also poses several challenges:

  1. You can often feel as if you are talking with a magazine or organization blog post rather than with a person.

That’s why it’s important to approach Bible topics in unexpected ways so as to get them out of their prepared presentations.

  1. Because PIMI Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that thinking independently of the Watchtower organization is evil, you will need to find non-threatening or safe ways to get them to think for themselves.

My book and blog contain many examples of questions you can ask them and statements you can make in order to get them to think without feeling that they are sinning by doing so.

  1. Many of them don’t want to deal with questions except by referring you to the Watchtower’s official website.

The best way I know of to counter this is to read the Watchtower posts they recommend and then follow up with questions about things they said that you don’t understand or that don’t make sense to you.

When you do that, the Witnesses can’t just refer you to the Watchtower website because you have already gone there and you are asking for their help in understanding what you read there.

  1. If you don’t meekly come around to the Watchtower’s way of thinking quickly, some Witnesses will quickly give up on you, kick the dust off their feet, and break off further communications.

They base this on Mark 6:11, where Jesus told his apostles: “And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.”

Try to come across as inquisitive rather than confrontational.

Recognize that you can’t control what they will or won’t do.

  1. Jehovah’s Witnesses have been indoctrinated to believe that any direct intellectual opposition is persecution.

That’s why it’s vital to make sure that you come across as a person who is trying to understand rather than as someone who is trying to straighten them out.

  1. They witness in pairs, which means that if you are getting through to one of them, they usually won’t show it.

They don’t want to show weakness or vulnerability in front of a fellow Witness.

They also fear being reported to the elders if they start to deviate from Watchtower approved thinking.

Let them know that you appreciate meeting with them and offer to meet with them individually if that would be more convenient.

Be sure to pray for them even though you don’t see any progress.

You don’t know whether you are getting through to them, but God does.
